Laila Irigoyen is currently a senior at Ripon High School. Excited but nervous about her last year of high school, she participates in many extracurricular activities on her campus. This year is her second year as Rally Commissioner, but her third year in Leadership. When asked about the program, Laila noted how excited she was for the new activities that the Student Council is planning. Being the tease she is, she gave us an inside scoop about the upcoming Winterfest but swore she didn’t know who could be King or Queen. Is she telling the truth?
As most of the world knows, Miss. Irigoyen has been participating in cross country and track the entirety of her high school career. With COVID restrictions, her plans have changed drastically. Laila stated, “Although my season is a little different this year, I will still be working just as hard, if not harder, as previous years. I have a responsibility as a leader to put in my best effort. I will stay hopeful for the season and encourage other athletes to do the same.” Although sport’s circumstances are unknown, Laila Irigoyen is committed to enjoying what she has left of her season. Disappointed about her last seasons, she wants to leave with a legacy that she never gave up. As a new “working woman” and student-athlete, Laila has a lot on her plate. Will she be able to handle it? From school, to practice, to work, and special VIP appearances, Laila has a lot to juggle… and she’s doing it flawlessly.
Irigoyen recently finished her college applications and is grateful she got them done ahead of time. After applying to University of Missouri, Northern Arizona University, University of Tennessee, High Point University, and Oklahoma State University, she has received numerous opportunities. “I was accepted into all of the colleges I applied for except for Tennessee and High Point, which I am still waiting on a response from. Looking back, I couldn’t be happier that I did early action and got the stress of applications out of the way. I was recently accepted into the OSU Honors College and finished my Mizzou Honors application as well. I got almost a full ride to Mizzou and a smaller scholarship from NAU,” Laila told me. Still awaiting multiple decisions, she finds comfort in knowing that she has been blessed with amazing options. Although she hasn’t decided where she will be going next fall, she trusts in God’s plans for her.
Laila is still getting used to her new schedule, but is thankful for the new flexibility. More time on her hands has allowed her to gain new work experience. “I love my job and coworkers. It keeps me grounded and provides more consistency to my days,” Irigoyen mentioned. When she’s not working or running, she can be found doing homework or hanging out with friends
Although COVID has changed a lot, it’s brought her closer to the people she cares about. Starting new friendships and growing in her past ones, has brought Laila so much comfort and joy. Gracie Jamie, who Irigoyen swears can’t sing, has been a recent figure in her life she can’t seem to get rid of. Their energy is unmatched and anyone that has them in class can tell their soulmates.
Laila’s next chapter is surely different than the past ones, but she’s determined to focus on writing this one with an open heart and mind!
